Actual rating: 2/10

Pros: Cool concept/world, American cover art for the book is sick

Cons: All concept, no actual story. Definitely a product of its time concerning women specifically. Character depth almost non-existent, featuring Gary Stu protagonist

There’s a lot of calling upon past events/incidents to elicit emotion/connection. The issue is that all of this stuff happens off page, so it doesn’t really land.

Book started off with an interesting premise but ultimately felt fell short of its potential due to lack of depth.

Pacing could’ve been much better and the overall plot doesn’t feel like it progressed that much. Rand’s character is frustrating.

Really like a lot of the characters but the way the story is structured - leaving Rand basically out of this entire book - is frustrating. Mat and Perrin were largely absent in book two, if I remember correctly.

The ending has essentially been the same for the third book in a row, with the supposedly terrifying big bad showing up at the last moment and being defeated within a chapter.

Actual rating a flat 7/10

I think reading that this was most peoples favorite book In the series set my expectations too high. Starts off enjoyable, is a slog in the middle, and has a good ending.

The world building really starts to tie some things together and rewards a you for being observant. The writing style of Jordan is so long winded though it can be hard not to zone out. Not to mention that the pacing between character storylines is all over the place.
