Isle of the Dead by Roger Zelazny
1.0
Although there are some interesting concepts and systems at work in this story, it feels at best half baked. This could be in part to it being a product of the new wave Sci Fi/ Fantasy stories of the 60s and 70s. It doesn’t feel as though there is a great grasp on what the world or characters are or want to be.
You get the feeling that the author took his kitchen sink of Sci Fi ideas and threw them into this story. Most of these flounder due to lack of explanation or depth; the concepts and imagination used within the book care more about *sounding* creative rather than actually being creative (I.e the passing mention of an ‘ultrasonic’ shower, etc). It leaves the world feeling shallow and in some ways, silly
The best aspects were Frank Sandow as a character , whom actually grew on me as I read, and the idea of Worldscaping and the religion surrounding it.
Overall: 3.25/10

The Beginning Place by Ursula K. Le Guin

Love Le Guin but this book was frustratingly vague and odd in a bad way. Very confused
