almost dnf'ed this but glad i stuck around cause it was fun ! Loved all the characters and their dynamics with each other and there's plot holes to be sure but it didn't hamper the overall book

loved the concept of the book it honestly had all the things I like to read but the inexact world building and overall poor execution left me feeling more bored than excited. pretty sure the book being ya also led to my indifference. sick cover though it's going in my favs!!

I'm usually a wary of books like this, which wrap up complex and extensive ideas into easily digestible pick me ups but this was still pretty interesting, and a good starting point for more in-depth readings <3

This was going to be a 4 star read until the last quarter which just felt underwhelming. Honestly, it's become a given for contemporary horror now to have a great setting and build but then get scared of delivering on it. Road of Bones was very typical in that sense like i loved the documentary makers go somewhere creepy but then none of that is developed on which was so disappointing :/ Also the sections on animal and natural spirits in general were well written but i feel that aspect could've been expanded on more.
Great work on the overall setting though I'm very much a fan of the setting/landscape being a character itself or looming over the story, being very present in it and this book delivered on that !

“It feels like…” she began, reaching for the right words in English. “Forever.” Dissatisfied, she pressed her fingers to the glass, indicating the trees and the white mountains that reflected back the moon. “Like the last stop before forever.” […]
He bent over the dash and looked out at those same mountains, at the wilderness beyond the edge of the town, and he understood. Here in this little scattering of human structures they could still convince themselves they were in the world of people, but once they passed into the woods, it would have been impossible to pretend they had control or authority over anything. Hunters and herders went into those woods or up that mountain from Akhust, and when they did they were surrendering to the primal nature of the world. Akhust stood as a stark reminder of how small a thing it was to be a human being.

Reads like a 15 yr old white girl's overlong strong independent FL x tsundere ML whump fanfiction. Atleast Verity was entertaining.
