This was right between a 3 and 4 star for me. In the end, it was tied up nicely and I think the epilogue helped a ton for me. I kept it at a 3 because I’m not sure if I would recommend this book. It would have to be a very specific audience that I recommended it to.
There were a few parts of the book that I loved—Mei’s personality and ferocity, Nelson in general, and some of the ways the book made me think pretty deeply.
There were also a few parts I really didn’t enjoy. The inner dialogue got so extensive and repetitive at times. I wanted more action and insight into the door, the world, etc. I also felt like the concept of husks was a bit confusing and that plot line felt undeveloped a bit.
Overall, I enjoyed the book and would probably read another of his in the future, just not back to back. 😅

I really loved this book. It was a unique plot line that I haven’t experienced before. I felt like many of the plot points were similar to COVID emotions and experiences. I would recommend it to anyone looking for something different to read. It’s got high tension, high emotion, and I loved the connections among all the characters.

If I’d read this book when I was younger, I would’ve loved it. I still really liked it, but it clearly was not written for someone my age to enjoy.
