The Deal of a Lifetime by Fredrik Backman
5.0
Heart-wrenching. Backman has a way with words and emotions like no other author I’ve ever read. The language is simple yet devastatingly full of impact, in ways you don’t expect.

I absolutely loved this book!
The dust jacket says: This isn't the kind of fairy tale where the princess marries a prince. It's the one where she kills him.
Add in a bone-dog, magic, a chicken possessed by a demon, and fairy godmothers the likes you've never seen and I have barely tapped into the magical world of this story. Despite the darkness in this book, there was so much humor, kindness, and friendship. I really couldn't put the book down and desperately want more tales of the characters from this great fantasy quest. This is my first T. Kingfisher book and you can bet I'll be reading more of her books!

Verity by Colleen Hoover

I liked CH’s writing style and I was a little gobsmacked by the twist. However, I think this genre isn’t for me. There was so much inappropriateness that turned me off and in the end, I didn’t really like any of the characters. I understand why people went crazy for this book, but it’s just not my thing. I need more intelligent thrillers that don’t have an icky “romantic” piece to them.
Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein

I had really high hopes for this book based on a bookseller’s recommendation, but it fell flat for me for some reason. Maddie and Queenie are great characters and I really loved Maddie’s POV in the later half of the book. But I think the writing style somehow hindered me from really immersing myself…that and there really isn’t too much plot.

I'm in a "Creepy Book Club" and this was June's pick. I had a hard time getting into this book, mostly because I really didn't like any of the characters. By the end of it, I couldn't put it down because I just had to know how all the pieces were going to fit together. It was maybe a little predictable (and the writing a little manipulative), but still a decent ending. I think the book is full of too many red herrings and side plots that don't really mean much to the whole story. Overall, it was a decent read. I look forward to the book club discussion at the end of the month and am curious about next month's read. I think I like my thrillers to be a little more thrilling and complicated...this just felt like a Lifetime movie.
A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman
5.0
I knew within a few pages that I was going to absolutely adore this book. I also ordered every single other Fredrik Backman book before I was halfway through this one. I haven’t felt this way about a character since I read A Prayer for Owen Meany (my favorite book) for the first time. Such a lovely story about such a lovely man.
Eight Perfect Murders by Peter Swanson
4.25
It’s been a long time since I read a good old-fashioned mystery like this. This is my first novel of Swanson’s and I’m quite pleased with it. I think I finished it with an amused smirk on my face, not because the book is amusing, but because I thought the book was very enjoyably clever!
Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt
4.5
I absolutely loved this book and the characters. Such a charming story in which I was really rooting for everyone. I really hope we get a sequel because I loved these characters!
