I know it's a short story, but I wish we had gotten more details about how she was before the baby. It would have helped contextualize her decline/why John wanted to come out to the rental. Still, very creepy, very sad read.

I don't deny that this book is very well written: the imagery, the emotion, the cycle through the hero's journey. However, the sharp racist turn that this book takes in the last third lost me. I know the book is an old classic and it reflects the beliefs of the time, but since it caught me completely by surprise, it just left a bad taste I my mouth. I want to like this book, but all I can remember right now are the slurs.

Sparse for a children’s book, but very fun now that I’m old enough to appreciate the accompanying art work. Had to pick it up again after watching  sarahserif’s  video.

When it hits, it hits! And the rest of the time…I definitely prefer his prose.

I really wanted to like this book bc it was a gift, but to be so short it was very boring. The central plot is that the diverse friends of a Russian artist living in NYC gather to pay their respect unknowingly in the days leading to the collapse of the USSR. However, the inconsistent use of third person which dipped back and forth into multiple characters heads without so much as a page break made the story difficult to follow. And while the main characters are Jewish, I can’t help but feel the close mindedness with which they are represented to be deeply harmful.

I have aged out of the YA genre, but wanted to give this a read since the show got cancelled. It was very fun and easy to keep up with. The worst part of the book is the constant interruptions from the narrator which bc really slow the story down. Also, what’s with the bear?
