Read this based on the recommendation from Fated Mates. I did enjoy the friction and banter between the two main characters, but there were some things I found a bit hard to overlook. I tried to keep in mind that this was written in 1997. The whole sabotaging-the-condom plot was hard for me to look past. I know she didn’t get pregnant on that occasion, but still. It’s so awful. And I know Cal says shouting is his “style of communication” but he uses such violent language that really turned me off - “I’m going to kill you”, “I should slap you”, etc. I guess we’re supposed to know he wouldn’t actually do those things, but that sets a bad precedent. The fact that he says them seems like a huge red flag that women should not ignore. However there were some hilarious moments too - the Lucky Charms, locking him out, the naked on the staircase scene.
I really loved this book and the thoughtful portrayal of depression. Seeing the main characters work to overcome their fears and break down their walls really got me in the feels.
The book starts in a very sad place and I wasn’t sure I was up for it (I’ve been sticking to lighter fare these days), but I ended up enjoying it. It was a bit frustrating that the main “misunderstanding “ went on for so many years but I loved seeing them get together. And I really enjoyed the kids - they were fairly well developed characters and played an important role in the story.
Enjoyed this amnesia story as it was an interesting way to get a “do over” and fix things that went wrong in the past. While the ending was pretty easy to guess, I did enjoy the element of mystery throughout the book about what happened to Clementine. And could Ed be any hotter??? :)
I enjoyed the concept of the Mismatch Society, but I think the writing needed to be tightened up. There are a lot of lengthy descriptions of meetings and conversations, without much action. And some of the obstacles keeping the hero and heroine apart seemed kind of insignificant to me.
I think this is the first dark romance I’ve read. Overall I enjoyed it, especially the sexy parts :) but I don’t think dark romance is for me. I also struggled with the plethora of errors towards the end of the book, particularly the gender of the Vera character constantly switching between he and she. I try to overlook minor mistakes but these ones really took me out of the book.
This was a super fun read. It was much funnier than I was expecting, loved the banter between the main characters as well as the supporting characters.
