Really beautiful, haunting, meditation on atrocities perpetuated by those in power and the scars it leaves on everyone else. Good translation, I never felt like I was reading a book in translation

I do not like Tamora Pierce so I don't know why I picked this up, except out of desperation (having 0 ebooks on my phone and a long metro ride). This is marked as YA but I swear it's middle grade, the heroine is a terrible Mary Sue and the morals are honestly a bit fascist. If it was ever good it has not held up for 2024.
