Rounding up to a 3 because he Matthew grew on me by the end, which is definitely the goal, but oy he was the most annoying MMC for a the entire first half of the book. I didn’t fully buy in to his change when it started to happen immediately after being treated kindly through the first panic attack. It felt like an abrupt about face for someone who was so wholly selfish and unlikeable at the start, but it came together over time.
I would’ve liked Hector a lot more without all of the DUDES 🙄 At a certain point that started to feel like lazy writing, and I normally would’ve rated this a 2-2.5 just for that, but I enjoyed the ending and how everything came together. I appreciated that it was messy and not all tied together in a neat little bow in a way that felt rushed. That being said, while I appreciate a genuine depiction of GAD, I didn’t enjoy being hit over the head with that story line. I think there are ways to make that a piece of character development and plot by showing rather than telling in a clinical way, but I digress.
Final thoughts: This was definitely a schitt’s creek inspired book with Matthew being a much less likeable David. I picked up on that right away, and it maybe wouldn’t have bothered me if I hadn’t just read another of this author’s books that was clearly a twisted version of the Santa Claus. I’d like to see something from this author that isn’t a twisted take of something else.
