Thank you to the author for providing a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review! This is my first Osgood book, and even though it’s the 3rd in the series I definitely think it can be read as a standalone. The main mystery of the book hooks you at the beginning, as you witness what you realize is the first killing of the long line of teens in Chicago. Osgood, the main character, is struggling with her chronic pain and trauma along with trying to do right by the work she intends to do.
I think the best part of the story was the mystery and horror elements. The story was scary, had pieces of being a thriller, and there were twists and turns until the end when the mystery was solved. Ending on a scary cliff-hanger that ties back to some earlier points in the mystery was chilling.
I think I would have loved a few more elements of camaraderie between the spectral inspectors themselves, some quiet moments of friendship outside of longing and worrying. This might be what is missed when you come in during book 3, but I do wish there had been more to their relationships in this book other than worrying about Osgood. This was what knocked it down from a 5 star for me.
Overall, an enjoyable read especially for those who enjoy horror mysteries!
