Not an outstanding piece of writing as it is, but it makes an attempt to be, and that attempt deserves respect. Certainly an experience worth the effort of actually reading it (the notes are confusing more often than not).

Condescending tone combined with frequently misinterpreted facts. There are much better books on the subject out there.

Truly a great book on both Slavic mythology and post-soviet Eastern European culture. However, the stories would benefit much more if they weren't structured into a single narrative.
