Brutal and soul-destroying in the best way. What a dark, terrible tale of first contact. It makes me want to rage at the injustice of it all, especially given with how much hope the human crew started out with.
This would be a stronger sci-fi work if there was better world building and an actual sense of tactics (seems like the military just mills around doing nothing) but the weaponized alien telepathy is extremely compelling as well as the main character.
Decent start but it's like the editing stopped midway through. The formatting became messy in epub (with the page number, title of the book, and the author's other pen name showing up on the middle of every other page) +, the characters started acting in unexpected ways that were hard to accept because there wasn't foreshadowing or the groundwork put down for a major shift in the dynamic. Would benefit from structural edits and removing repetitive dialogue.
