A Song To Drown Rivers was a delightful read, my first take on Chinese historical fantasy and it did not disappoint. This book is a gorgeous story about one of the four beauties of ancient China, Xi Shi, a beautiful girl from a village, who became a spy to take over the Wu kingdom and a need to satisfy her vengeance. I felt completely immersed in this story and found myself itching to learn more about ancient China. Ann Liang did a wonderful job at building relationships and emotion, my heart would ache for Xi Shi. I am amazed that every relationship in this book had dimension.

My singular critic is that Ann Liang was able to tell an entire story in 300 pages, which to some people is the perfect length, but to me this made the book feel rushed. I would have loved to see more of Xi Shi's training, and developments with the love interests. But honestly, I fell so deeply in love with this story that I would have kept reading forever.

Hot take, if this book was released in 2024 it wouldn’t do as well, needless to say I did enjoy it and I understand why it is considered a classic. Although the amount of singing in this book was a little unnerving.

This is one of the most fucked up romance I have ever read. Magnolias and BJs relationship isn’t soulmate love how they believe, but insane codependency, and clashing attachment styles.
If BJ truly loved Magnolia he would have NEVER cheated on her, and he would have never sleeped with the hundred of girls after they broke up, he would have waited for her. I don’t think anyone can compare what Magnolia did, after the relationship to BJs choices, his choices were significantly more fucked up. I hope Magnolia finds some real friends who truly love her and get her to block this man, and she needs to learn that he doesn’t love her.

I was a Little disappointed with the sequel but I’m hoping it was purely for world and knowledge building. Of course I love this world so I still enjoy the book. But the amount of words and pages was INSANE, took me forever to finish. Also Violet was annoying in the first half.
