I went into this book knowing it was way outside of my usual comfort-zone genres. I never read romance novels. I'm a doom-and-gloom kind of gal. Historical fiction or fantasy kind of gal. Definitely not a contemporary romance kind of gal. But, with all the positive reviews, and with it being February and the month of love, I figured I'd give it a try.

The story was definitely intriguing. Alex, First Son of the United States falls in love with Prince Henry of Wales. With two high-powered political families, this relationship was sure to cause some drama. I related with both Alex and Henry in their struggles to find out who they truly are. Doing so in the public eye is another story. While there were moments of this plot that did give me something to root for, like them discovering their feelings, the reactions of the public, the US election.. there still always felt like there was something missing for me. It had nothing to do with the story - as romance novels go, I'm sure this one has many appealing features. But as someone who thrives on conflicting, mysterious, thrilling stories, I just didn't have enough in this book for me to be excited about.

The character development was excellent, and the cast diverse. I instantly fell in love with Nora for her spunky, no-nonsense, who-cares? attitude. The whole thing culminating in a nail-biting US election was very reminiscent of January's election and the anxiety to get that cheeto out of office, so that did help me feel good about this read. Overall, a great book if you like romance, but lacking if you're more of a dark, moody reader.
