Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

Since this was a book club book I really wanted to pace myself. However it was simply impossible to put down. The story just pulled me in with a nice blend of action, romance and dragons :) We get to be in the head of the MC for the whole book. She is young, but thankfully not very naïve. As the youngest of 3, she did not expect to be one of the dragon riders. With a mother and sister already legends she is not expecting her time as a trainee to be easy.
The book does ready very YA, even though its most definitely not. Near the end we get some spicy seans I was not expecting.
All in all, if you are craving some fast paced dragon filled action, I highly recommend.

I had a reading epiphany mid book. I finally touched on why I like some YA books and some make me cringe. Looks like I just can't handle first hand narration when we in the head of a young woman. I was a young teenage girl once upon a time, and I really do not want to relive those boy crazy/ overly dramatic thoughts. I would much rather be in the head of someone totally different to me. Seeing events from a different perspective. Instead I am stuck with : oh I have to fight , my friends relay on me, I must be strong, but oh how wonderful his muscles look in this light, just makes me want to bang my head on the wall.
However, this book in comparison to its predecessor, was much more in line with my idea of a good YA fantasy. Although we are still in Brie's head, the book is a lot more plot based which helps. We finally get to learn more on a fascinating new magic system - root. Brie herself is a lot less annoying as before. I think her growth The pacing g is good and we learn every new element of the story in a reasonably organic fashion avoiding exposition.
If only we could do without the YA angst it would have been a 5 stars, but I am definitely not the target audience.

This series just gets better and better with each book. I have no way to even explain my feelings after finishing except for WTF!!! Soooo much happened and we learned so much about the would and its origins and think my mind was blown mid reading.
I will defiantly need to re-read it before going to the next one.
To be honest not much to say about this book. Initially when I started reading I was even quite liking it. The reason for the MCs actions did not seem to far fetched and believable. Soon though, the book turned into a very YA and even more tropy version of an already YA and tropy ACOTAR.
I know that Brie is young, but seems even more naive then she should having lived such a harsh and hard life.
I am happy that this is only a duology. Probably would not read the next book if I new there were going to be more.
