Obsession by Jennifer L. Armentrout
3.0
I felt so torn while reading this book because well I love JLA she's an awesome storyteller and she writes some of the most swoon worthy guy characters I've seen so far. I mean she knows how to take that annoyingly hot, absolutely asshol-ish guy and make him lovable. Her heroine's are mostly smart, witty, absolutely amazing and kick-ass characters. Yes, they all have their faults but the grow and learn throughout the book and get even better throughout their series.
I put this book down after every couple chapters back 2014 simply because it just wasn't clicking for me. This story is set in a world in which I love and I honestly wouldn't mind more of this particular world. Just not told from these particular characters POV.
This story just didn't grab me like I needed it to. I didn't care much for the Characters at all, I honestly thought it was just because of... Well I'll just say it Daemon and Katy! I remember thinking (more like shouting at the walls) "WOW is she trying to make him even more of a jerk than Daemon was?" or "Seriously Katy was not this stupid!" I ended up trying to forget about Daemon and Katy and actually give Hunter and Serena a chance. It worked (mostly during the sex scenes) but honestly every single time I started to like Hunter he did something kind of juvenile. In fact that seem to be a thing both of the characters had going for themselves. They acted/reacted to situations in a very childish manner. That put me way off, I mean if it was YA I might have been able to let some things slide. I just couldn't with these adult characters.
Serena made the MOST asinine ass decisions ever. I'm glad this is fiction because seriously a person can't be that delusional( i take that back I know someone who is). Then don't get me started on the fact that they both didn't know the other had a thing for them. It was mainly Serena asking questions like.. What made him do this for ME, I'm not understanding why he would go through this for ME, It's just a job, but why did he do this extra stuff for ME (I'm paraphrasing) but Seriously it was something along those line every pages after a certain point in the story. Made me want to pull my hair out.
The overall story was just okay. I was however excited when it got to the parts that took place in Origins and seeing some of the characters I love from The Lux series. That and the steamy sex scenes made it enjoyable.
I seriously wouldn't mind more of a story in the Lux/Arum world. I want Dee's story or maybe a prequel standalone that's set back in time on the Luxen/Arum planets. I would LOVE that, it could show everything that happened from the POV of someone who actually experienced it. I know they talk a little about it in the series but that would be awesome.
Overall it's a solid 3 stars because it's not that I hated the story (I can't hate anything JLA writes) it's just that this one wasn't for me.

I really Love Sherrilyn and the world she built but at times it's just a lot to process. Extra long dialogue, unnecessarily drawn out scenes, then many worlds mixing together it can be hard to keep up with at times.
I say that because it's the truth at least in my opinion. That however that doesn't take away the fact that she's a great story writer. And I love what she does with this series. She really does handle a lot of issues teens face today. I love that about the series. She has her characters handle everyday teenage life as well as the dangers of the supernatural world. I do feel at times things are rushed through. Like after a drawn out scene that last 3 pages something I felt needed a little more explanation only got a paragraph or two. But hey you can't please everyone and besides those few little things this series is really great and I recommend it for everyone.
But that epilouge though!?!? I have a feeling Illusion is going to be the best book out of the CON series.

I had to give this a 2.75 star rating. While I didn't care for a lot of things in this story, I can at least admit it was entertaining at parts...
One of my main problems is the token Black friend (major side eye) then of course she doesn't even make it a quarter of the way through the book. Strangely, Emma kept saying things about her funeral and wanting to kill her because of course she TALKED TOO MUCH. Then SURPRISE, that shit actually happens.
While I wanted to DNF it after Emma wanted to snatch her friends new weave out and then the popping off of the fake nails during the attack scene, I decided to stick it out. But seriously, why did any of that have to be in the story? I'll just be honest that did nothing, but irritate me for everything else that happened after.
I won't even go too deep into the other stuff I can't stand, like...
-The gorgeous hero that girls can't help but drop their panties for. I'll admit that's a thing in ALL YA especially Paranormal so that's just something I hate in General.
-The constant Porcelain skin reminders
-The first and third dual perspective
-The twist you saw from miles away
-The Failed cliff hanger
-Then there's the forced... Well just about everything else.
This is probably a really fun series that probably gets better, however, the stuff I mentioned just put me off for the rest of the series. So I won't be continuing, at least at this moment. I mean I did read 3 of the Fallen Novels and those were just awful, so anything is possible...

Don't Look Back by Jennifer L. Armentrout

I guessed it, I guessed the WHOLE damn thing and pretty early on. After I guessed it, I started to notice certain things and after every little thing it just solidified my suspicions. I swear either I was a decent investigator in a past life or I watch way too much of the ID channel. Either way I'm still AWESOME!!!
This was GGRRREEAAATTT and I will admit usually when I figure out the twist to a mystery novel I get a little annoyed and knock of half a star or so. As fun as it is playing the guessing game I always want to be surprised. With this story I guessed it, but Jennifer played me often and had me second guessing myself. It made things even more intense.
Anyway this was a great mystery, lots of twist and turns and because of the protagonist mental state, things aren't ever really what they seem. This story also had a Heathers/Jawbreaker-esque vibe (SHEESH i'm probably showing how old I am now) but the storyline was much more believable. It was awesome, seriously I don't know what else to say besides. Go pick it up at your library or book store and read it. If you are on the fence about JLA and all the hype around her, I assure you it's for a good reason. BUT if you don't like supernatural books give this one a try you won't be disappointed. I really wouldn't mind seeing it on the big screen. A story like this hollywood couldn't screw it up that badly, could they? I feel my first ever fancast happening soon.
***I had finally started growing my nails out and after two days of reading this book I don't have a single one left. Well except for my toenails because, EWW! I haven't had a book cause me to chew my nails off in a LONG time. Thank you Armentrout! *Sighs* now I have to walk around with nubs for the next week or so. I guess a good book is worth it.***
