This was really hard to rate. There was a lot that I loved and a lot that I hated. The MC was in many ways relatable, but also extremely off-putting. Intentional, I'm sure...but I'm not sure how to articulate how I feel. This would be an excellent book club pick!

Did not finish book. Stopped at 6%.
Oh hunny, nooo. 😬 I was all for a queer feminist Dracula, but let's not be insulting.

I went into this expecting a novel (mostly because it says "a novel" on the cover) and while it may be in the technical sense, in the colloquial sense it is not. It is, in fact, a loosely connected collection of short stories, and not a particularly well-constructed one (though it improved structurally near the end). I got a bit of whiplash reading it before I figured this out. That said, the individual stories were exquisite!

Beautiful, musical prose. Vivid characters. My only complaint is that the "prologue" page should be torn right out and burned. If you have any appreciation of style, you will be offended by its existence.

A love letter to Proust and the value of language, the beauty of the mundane, the power of memory. Gorgeous start to finish. I feel like a lot had to have been lost in translation because the French language is so integral to the story, but huge props to the translator because I still "got" it.
