The book is obviously a set up for the sequel. Nothing relating to the plot of the series actually happens until the last couple chapters, which for the audiobook was the last 2-ish hours of a 21 hour book.
The word choice is strange at times, the romance plot was pretty dry and most scenes were pretty unnecessary, and the dragon riding parts should've been more of the focus than anything. Much of the mystery and big reveals/twists feel like they kind of came out of nowhere, and mostly undermine what came before it.
This book is to dragon rider fantasy books, what 50 Shades is to Twilight.
The only major positive is the diversity in gender, race, and sexuality is really great. I didn't love the in-universe explanation for the main character having Ehlers Danlos, but that could be more personal than anything as someone with EDS.
If you believe this is the best fantasy novel of all time, read more fantasy books. I BEG you.

Storygraph had some incredible reviews of this book, I picked it up on a whim from a local bookstore. Let me tell you, one of the weirdest and frankly, dumbest books I've read. It starts out ok, super cute backstory, fun characters. The plot is super light and pretty see-through, but it's not meant to be War and Peace. Then like a third of the way through there was the strangest plot twist. And it kept. Getting. Weirder. There were some decent parts, but I was so busy waiting to find the next weird twist, I never really enjoyed the half-decent bits. The suspension of disbelief ask is much too high and the payoff is much too cheese. Definitely would not recommend.
