My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabeth Russell
4.0
“People will risk everything for a little bit of something beautiful.”
The story explores an inappropriate relationship between high school teacher and teenage student- reminiscent of Lolita and all consuming. The book alternates between past and present gracefully, taking the reader on Vanessa's journey as she narrates her trauma, heartache, and an obsessive impossible love affair.
Where do I begin? This book can be extremely triggering for some, myself included, but I'm a masochist so I dove head first into this book. There were times I had to pause and give myself a break. The content is heavy. It's thought-provoking, intimate, and grotesque. This is one of the few books that haunted my thoughts throughout the day while I was reading it. I was so emotionally invested in her story and you will be, too.
