Eragon by Christopher Paolini
3.0
Got distracted when poorly by copy of Eragon, having taken my kids to see the film some years ago and remembering my ear being twisted about how great the book was and how much better than the film... and was promptly very disappointed. It's not that the book is bad as such, it is just very very cliched and obvious. Characters are two dimensional caricatures; the plot is starts with as a cliched cookie cutter orphaned child, mysterious old man with hidden secrets, an sinister visitor... and then promptly runs out of steam as the journey seems to become more important than the destination. Eragon himself is oddly passive, Saphira unimpressive.
As a teacher, I am impressed that a fifteen year old could stick at it from beginning to end but apart from that, it is a by-the-numbers book!
