Ready Player Two by Ernest Cline
1.0
I immediately disliked who Wade turned into by the time the story actually started moving along. I listened to this book (like I had with Ready Player One), and I said "EW" out loud more than I should have. He made some problematic decisions in my opinion, not to mention the strange internal monologue that excused most of his wrong-doings. I just wasn't a fan of him. However, as the High-Five returned to the forefront of the story, he got less annoying. Was it because he had less focus on himself? I'm not gonna say "no."
Wade getting Samantha back feels undeserved. He had hardly any character development. Not to mention that they were apart for 3 years after 1 week of dating. It's disgustingly obsessive the way Wade goes on and on about her when she's gone so far with her life to do more. Then she just willingly takes him back after he begs her to find the final shard for him? WEAK. I expect better from her.
During the final battle scene between Og and Anorak, I was about to be okay with Wade being too harmed to participate. It wasn't his fight to stream live either though. I wanted to get upset about his choice to do that until Og got the better view on camera. Again, I disliked Wade a lot in this story, so any reason that he gets put down a peg or two is fine by me.
Overall, it's a fun adventure that shows a lot of love for a character that deserved better recognition. Kira's adventure brought to life just like it would have been for Halliday and Og and their friends to play through the D&D campaign. The dedication for Prince was interesting, and I'm sure I would've appreciated it more if I were a bigger fan.
That ending tho... Do I like the idea of it being an immortal clone that told me this story? Meh. I can't say that I don't appreciate the creative twist though. Ready Player *Two*, because it's the second version of Parzival. I'm hoping this has a lot of details that I missed in the first listen that could help justify the ending on a second listen/read. But I don't see myself revisiting it too soon.
