Started off fun and whimsical. Described as a cross between some horror movie and snow white, and sadly, that is all this was. The main character was insipid and forgettable, so much so that her "despite everything, it's still you!" moment was completely overshadowed by the melanie martinez mrs potato head preachy tone. I really wanted to like this book.

Aggressively mid. Edit: thinking more on it and the set up for the next book where the protagonist is an established foil to jude but is actively going down the path of evil is actually an interesting premise and adds more to the original story as well, it was a lot more intentional than i realised. the last few pages are the best part of the book but not enough to justify the 300+ pages of mediocrity
