The Idiot by Fyodor Dostoevsky
slow-paced
- Loveable characters? No
2.0
if you love dostoevsky and can’t handle a negative review, then skip this one, pal 💀
my parents got me this for my 18th birthday (i was in a very pretentious russian lit phase). i had fallen in love with “crime and punishment” months before my birthday and was excited to read “the idiot.” thus began a long journey.
now matter what, i just couldn’t get into it. i’d been starting it and then dnfing it for YEARS, and never made it halfway through. for whatever reason, i just didn’t like it. “crime and punishment” instantly enthralled me but “the idiot” felt like torture.
the writing style was more fantastical (like very dramatic, which i despise. i don’t care who the author is) and less engaging. none of the characters were remotely interesting or written well. they had a million different nicknames (which i know is very popular in a lot russian books & i normally don’t mind it), and it was hard to tell who was who and who was talking. as far as the philosophy aspect, i didn’t particularly care to delve into that or pay attention. just keeping track of the plot and the characters (which again, i didn’t care about) drained me.
so why did i finish this? my parents gifted me a copy like 6 years ago and i didn’t have it in my heart to donate it. so i wanted to finish this and be done with it.
i think it’s worth a try, but i honestly would skip this one if you haven’t read something by dostoevsky before this. otherwise you might not try him again 💀 it’s very different from “crime and punishment.” like night and day.
overall i’m disappointed, but now i know to stick to his shorter works!

eh 3.75 ⭐️ it was a lot better than what i thought it’d be (mainly bc it was about chaol and nesryn). the pace was ok, but what made it bearable was the blooming relationship between chaol and yrene. there’s some good twists in this one. on to kingdom of ash now🧎🏾♀️

i had seen people talking about the show on instagram for a while and i decided to try it. i admit, it was mostly FOMO and boredom that convinced me to try. but it was instant love. everything—from the writing itself to the music to the actors’ performance was a stroke of genius. i didn’t think i could ever become emotionally attached to a show after 12 episodes, but it happened.
and then i discovered the screenplay. i was so happy, but a little hesitant. what if i didn’t love the screenplay? i’ve read plays before and they usually have more context (directions and scenery), whereas scripts don’t. but i’m so happy to say that i LOVED the script. i can’t compare the script to the adaptation because they’re very different, but what i can say is that waller-bridge’s passion is made apparent in the script. so passionate and tender. she treats every single character with respect and love. even fleabag, with all her flaws, is loveable. she’s not an evil or a bad person; she’s just coping the way she thinks is best. but she never makes any excuses. she’s human.
reading the script and watching the adaption is so interesting. when i first watched the show, i despised Dad and Godmother. but as i began to read the script, i became more empathetic toward them. they are human, and humans are complex creatures.
man, this was so beautiful. fleabag is a memorable character and screenplay and show. so special.
note: i think it’s prob better to watch the show first and then read this.

boring. too many bland characters that blend in together. writing feels very weak and impersonal. not compelling. not interested in ever finishing this.

boring, confusing as hell. so many characters with 0 personality traits, so it’s hard to tell what’s going on. i also don’t understand what *the point* is to all of this. i can’t even tell that morrison wrote this. the writing style feels off compared to song of solomon, sula, and a mercy. not worth finishing.

this is actually the most approachable book/resource on investing that i have found (so far). it covers every stage of investing thoroughly. it’s a little redundant but i understand why. i can’t really say too much about it , other than that i will definitely be buying the physical copy (& probably the ebook). i need to have this resource on hand. and i need to be able to take notes on this.
i think everyone should give this book a shot. the intro and first chapter are mostly about setting a realistic budget. this would also be a really good graduation present!
