I have literally just put this book down and I am filled with so many thoughts that I don't quite know what to put in this review.

THE CHARACTERS
are amazing and complex and imperfect and perfect. they have a depth to them that you can go your whole life knowing someone without knowing them intimately. I want to have a favourite, but I found myself loving Sam, Sadie and Marx equally all at once.

THE WRITING
is beautiful and I found myself loving it immediately from the beginning. as someone who studies creative writing, I definitely learned from Zevin's writing.

IMPROVEMENTS
although I know people who disagree with me, I feel like the plot was floating in the middle. I was waiting for something to happen. think of it like a rollercoaster: you're at the top of a spike, waiting for something to happen and you're and when it does it completely takes you by surprise. it was the waiting that caused me to lower my rating from 5 to 4 stars.

The Tensorate Series by Neon Yang is one I yearn to reread and dissect to be familiar with all of its magnificence.

this is the first time I am reading yang's work, and I can assure you it won't be the last. i am going into my third and final year of my degree and seeing the way Yang describes the world around them and their characters is truly unique and mind opening. I have learned so much reading their work.

despite saying this, my fondness for the stories still fluctuated, meandering from raw enjoyment, unable to put down the book, to the beginnings of the seeds of boredom--but I was never in the latter state for long. Yang consistently managed to realign me to the plot and return me to the characters, whom I came to love as if they were my own.

thank you to chris for gifting me this!

going into this, i knew nothing about the stories it would share and the lessons it would teach. in fact, i thought it was going to be another publication of ‘instagram poetry’. i am glad i was wrong.

gill’s novel in verse is a story of true inspiring womanhood, sexuality, learning to be comfortable in your own skin and the journey of finding your place in the world. it is magic incarnate. i have discreetly loved narrative poetry for a while now and gill makes me want to scream my love from the mountain tops.
