The Feminist Killjoy Handbook by Sara Ahmed

Sara Ahmed's 'The Feminist Killjoy Handbook' is for the everyday feminist. Within it, she addresses key issues within society and how to navigate through and around them. Though the title suggests 'handbook', it is certainly just as much of a manifesto. Opening with a personal anecdote, Ahmed shares stories and media articles, Ahmed considers race, religion and queer identity, truly delving into the core of the lies society mass produces and sells to its people.

Ahmed was once a professor of Race and Cultural Studies at Goldsmiths, but resigned in protest to the failure of the university's dealings with sexual harassment. She is now an independent scholar. Since, Ahmed has published a plethora of feminist, postcolonial and postmodern texts.

Thank you to the publisher for sending me an advanced reader copy.

the merchant of venice is supposed to be a comedy, however shakespeare's portrayal of shylock makes this seem more like a tragedy.

an interesting exploration of gender roles. the narrator's descent into madness is rather thought provoking too due to the circumstances and the control of her physician husband, who believes he knows best on female matters.

spoiler alert: he does not.

Sharon Emmerichs’ Shield Maiden is the next perfect read for fans of the How to Train Your Dragon franchise and The Guinevere Deception. Emmerichs includes representations of chronic pain and disability, as well as PTSD. Not only that, but her knowledge from being a professor of early British literature shines true in her attention to detail within her descriptions. With that being said, sometimes the description is a little heavy and I found myself anticipating action rather than delving into descriptions of historical accuracies.

Emmerichs weaves together the heroism from ancient tales for a reader who actively seeks and devours feminist retellings of classic tales.
