Skinny Me by Charlene Carr
4.0
I was contacted by Charlene Carr and offered a free e-copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
As I was reading Skinny Me, I couldn't help but develop a bad taste for Jennifer. I've had family that have lost hundreds of pounds and I understood that there is more to getting healthy than the physical side. It's an emotional battle. And yes, by the end, Jennifer redeems some of her more unlikeable qualities from earlier in the book. But the way she treated people, especially her own cousin who was nothing but kind to her for the entirety of her life? That really bothered me.
Even when she was trying to be happy with herself she was still jealous of what others had. It seemed very petty and childish and as though she wouldn't be able to flip a switch with those sorts of character traits holding her back.
She wasn't the worst character though. And I enjoyed all the other characters and their diversity. Part of me thinks Jenn was written as a character we were meant to "love to hate." Kudos to Carr for achieving that, as it's not an easy feat.
The plot was sound and wrapped up nicely, though rather quickly.
Overall a good, quick read. Just be prepared to not love Jenn. She'll make you roll your eyes and appreciate what you have for how little she appreciates everything she's been granted. But she definitely portrays how extreme the mental aspect of losing weight can be.

And this is how you skip the second book slump. HOLY CROW, ARE YOU KIDDING ME. I finished this book approximately 3 minutes ago and I can't form a functional sentence.
Okay, attempting to breath at a normal pace and lower my heart rate back to where it should be.
If it's possible, I have fallen in love with Driggs and Lex and all the wonderful little Junior Grims that Damico has thought up.
I love that the characters are still their sassy selves and they haven't fallen flat from the first book. They're just as great as they were before, which is something a lot of authors struggle to uphold in the second book.
The plot didn't lose any momentum. It was still action packed and made me giddy and nervous and want to throw it across the room. So yay!
I'm so glad I bought the third book at the same time I bought the second. Off to go enjoy the final chapter of Croak now. Wish me luck.

I finished this book approximately 4 minutes ago. And I'm still crying.
Upon finishing this book, I hugged it and yelled "THIS IS A TERRIBLE BOOK" while rocking back and forth and sobbing. This did not bode well, as it is nearly 1am.
I fell in love with the first two books in this series. They were phenomenal. I loved the characters and the plot and all that they stood for. But like most final trilogy books, this one was different. My heart literally hurts. And I honestly don't know how to explain this other than "OMG THE FEELS".
I will never be able to explain how much I absolutely loved this series, so please just do yourself the biggest favor in the world and buy it. Read it. Fall in love with it. Hate Ms. Damico for ruining your life. Accept it. And finally worship it when you're done.
I have a feeling a reading slump is going to follow this book. I can't think about anything other than how perfect this ended the series and how much I hate everything about the ending at the same time.
I have to thank everything under the sun that gave me the opportunity to have this book in my grasp. I never would have found it otherwise. And most people probably won't find this series either. But please, if you're reading this, don't be one of those people. Fall in love with Lex, Driggs, and Uncle Mort. Hate Ferbus. Wish you lived in Croak. Laugh at the humor woven everywhere in the pages of this trilogy, wish being a Grim was a real job, and more than anything, embrace the immense amount of emotion coming your way. It's worth it.
5/5 stars. An instant favorite series. I'm going to try to regain control of my breathing now and convince myself that rereading the last 3 chapters is not, in any way, a good idea. Especially not with how fragile this book made me, and knowing work awaits in a few, short hours.

The Vicar of Nibbleswicke by Roald Dahl

As always, a cute Roald Dahl book. Didn't realize it was so short but loved it all the same! Though not being from England it took a bit to realize what a Vicar was. Process of elimination worked fine though!

Oh my goshhhhh. I can't even form words for how beautiful this book is. I'm so glad that I kept reading even though I was iffy about it at the start of reading.
Where to start. Hmm, well I loved all the characters. Paige, Kayleigh, Tessa and Morgan's friendship was so beautiful and realistic and I can completely see 4 friends in high school having such a gorgeous relationship. And then came Ryan and Max and suddenly I fell in love with them so much.
These characters suddenly came to represent people from my own life that I cherish so much. And I'm almost positive that's why I got so attached to each of them.
The plot at the beginning was slow. It really took me a while to get into it and I would have been so sad if I had given up on it. Because the longer I read it, the faster I was turning pages and the more in love with it I became.
As Hazel Grace Lancaster says, "I fell in love the way you fall asleep; slowly and then all at once."
I didn't sob at the end but I got so choked up and was so thrilled with everything wrapped up so neatly with a bow. Like most people who read this book, I predicted the ending long before I got there, but I was so excited that it ended the way I had hoped.
It wasn't so much how it ended. It was how they got to the ending. And I am so so pleased with how they got there. Absolutely loved this book.

I absolutely loved this book. I wasn't sure what I was expecting and I'd heard great things about this series, but I can proudly say I'm excited to purchase the rest of the series.
The one thing that kind of bugged me (and I'm sure you could relate nearly every book/movie/tv show to something else) but all I pictured while reading was a glorified version of The Bachelor, which I don't agree with. So trying to separate myself from that and put that sort of theme to a fictional event, knowing it wasn't happening, was something I struggled with.
I absolutely loved the characters. I found America to be relatable and true to herself the entire time. She wasn't ever trying to be something she wasn't and it was just time that allowed her to grow into what her feelings really were underneath.
I slightly can't stand Aspen though (even though I LOVE his name). He was kind of a jerk. You led this girl on for 2 years and all of a sudden you want to break things off? And I'm absolutely suspicious of him, especially from the first few chapters hearing about him 'suddenly' being happier and saving up for a proposal. Ugh, no. There's something fishy with him. Even if he loves America, I feel like he loves someone else too.
Maxon I kind of adore. He sounds like cute nerdy and confused, but still genuine. Which is something I strongly adore in a character. He has his flaws just as much as his strengths. Perk!
I am so glad I finially got around to reading the first book in this series, and I look forward to reading the rest of it!

I am hopeless when it comes to not judging books by their cover. I bought this book, not even reading what the description was and started. A few chapters in, I actually turned it over and read the description off the back. Wait, what did I pick up to read?!
I was absolutely not expecting the plot line based on the cover. Greek history and ancient oracles and superpowers....all in a book with a pearl necklace and knife on the cover. I was shocked. I didn't even get that vibe from the title of the book! Pretty surprising but I can't complain!
Overall, I adored Harper. I adored Harper and Ryan. I adored Harper and David. Basically, Harper makes me like people. She's a pretty phenomenal character who is a strong, independent woman and who does all the can to achieve as much as she can. Just....she's inspiring while still having superpowers.
The relationships in the book were realistic. They grew on me and I really appreciated the growth of each one. Including her friendships - even if there was a teeny amount of lying, it was necessary.
There were times while reading this that I giggled and times where I was sitting here dumbfounded repeating, "Wait what....no. wait....what?" This book had surprises and humor and butterflies and yay. It was lovely and I'm so glad I picked it up! It was a quick read and although I really wanted to give it 5 stars, it just wasn't an all time favorite for me. But still a fantastic book that I would happily recommend to people.

Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them by J.K. Rowling, Newt Scamander

I loved reading a bit more into Hagrid's favorite part of the Wizarding World - the Magical Creatures! Some tempted to give me nightmares and some made me want to find one and cuddle it until the end of time. Overall this was a great bit of insight further into Harry's world - something I'll NEVER complain about receiving. And if the coming soon movie features an Opaleye dragon, I may die at it's sheer beauty. Fingers crossed!
Quidditch Through the Ages by J.K. Rowling, Kennilworthy Whisp

Definitely an insightful and helpful guide to the game of Quidditch for young witches and wizards all over the globe. I love that it broke down not only the origin of the game, but also the positions origin, the teams, other popular broomstick games, and more. This was very informative and gave insight to another aspect of the Wizarding World that wasn't as deeply touched upon in the original series. With all that said, Go Finchburg Finches!!
How to (Un)cage a Girl by Francesca Lia Block

Definitely contains some gorgeous poetry and quotes. However I wasn't expecting it to be so....angry. I'm not sure how much of this book was taken from personal experience or references to true events but the overall tone was so angry, it was hard to look past that into just the beauty of the words.
Definitely some gorgeous poetry mixed in though. Can't argue that fact.
