Adam Zmith's 'Solemates' dives deep down into the history of the fetish for feet, spanning centuries of work from those who came before. Such as religious figures and psychologists or "beard-strokers" with an opinion. The book begs the question "why is the foot fetish the most evil of them all?" My answer? I have no idea. Society moves in suspicious ways, but everything surrounding sex is greatly important to our health in so many ways. I take immense pride to warmly welcome anybody and everybody who has any kink or fetish because it truly is normal. It's a quirk to ourselves that we carry that makes us who we are. Sometimes bullies want to pin us down and throw shade at what they don't understand. Well I say read a book. (Intended segway to encourage you to read THIS book by Adam Zmith because it deserves your attention)
I love the history surrounding the foot fetish as we weave in and out and around through time and history to try and understand this common fetish. For many, it's not just the sight or touch of the feet themselves, but it's the power they represent depending on where you lean in terms of sexual dominance or submission. Point is, there are layers to every fetish that makes us who we are. There's nothing wrong with them, they're not hurting anybody (unless you enjoy pain *wink wink*) but you catch my drift.
Adam tries to really shed a positive light on foot fetishism so that it can help open up some awareness about it. Deep down inside all of us is a curious freak waiting to be let out. Let out to immediately be greeted by a warm, welcome and non-judgemental hug. Truly an insightful read that helped me learn a lot more about foot fetishism, and myself.

Stephen Graham Jones's My Heart is a Chainsaw is a MASSIVE love letter to the slasher genre of old, there are references all over this thing due to our main character being a huge horror and slasher fan. I really connected with Jade and was invested in her story, for me though elsewhere not all the characters were particularly interesting. But they were still fun, mostly thanks to Jade.
Sometimes the writing can feel like it's spinning its wheels with a tad bit over explanation, things which kind of feels like they just happen, which somewhat took me out of it at times. This might be my fault though since I took a long time to finish it. But when it's good, it's REALLY good!
The book can feel very tense when the killer is present which I loved, eagerly waiting for the blade to come slashing down. And the ending is brutal and insane! THAT Friday the 13th nod! I was screaming!!! Overall a thoroughly entertaining book and I'm keen to get reading the second one.

I had high expectations going into this! I'm only familiar with Ryū Murakami's work from the horror movie "Audition" which was adapted from his novel of the same name, and I love that movie. The book I'm yet to read, but I was excited for In the Miso Soup. Nonetheless, I had a great time reading this!
It starts off with great detail on the neon nighttime life in Tokyo for people looking for sex, having a great time in sex clubs and that kind of thing, and the mystery surrounding Frank was interesting. I liked Kenji a lot too, his head was screwed on right. However while I did enjoy the story, surrounding the death of a young girl, it became quite predictable on who the killer was. But I appreciated the direction the book went that wasn't the familiar shocking twist. As a horror fan, I liked how depraved gory things had gotten.
The book attempts to humanise a killer with a tragic background. Dealing with things most of us "normal" people deal with our whole lives, and asks us to look inside the heart of a killer and at least try to understand. Maybe not sympathise, but at least understand. It doesn't reach heights I hoped it would, it's definitely got a stronger first half before the obvious became apparent. But overall this was a very great read that's right up my street in many ways. Makes me want to check out more of Ryū Murakami's work or Japanese fiction in general.

Stephen King's Salem's Lot suffers ever so slightly at times from rambling in areas that could've been trimmed down, and juggling a large portion of characters to keep track of. And maybe the book could've been shorter if the "deleted scenes" after the it was finished was taken out to lessen the length. However keep that separate side story in there that goes back centuries, that was really good!
Elsewhere the book really excels with its atmosphere and building suspense. I really loved the early chapters of the vampire only subtly making its presence felt, posing as a man to lure in folk through powerful, red, manipulative eyes. Eyes that make death feel oh so good. And the main characters were very cute and easy to root for!
I was slightly hoping to have another banger of a Stephen King book to scream about, but the end result is satisfying enough. Despite some writing choices of King's that didn't always translate well, he definitely has a way of reeling you in. I love me some vampires, really fun read!
