The final thoughts:
  1. I would have hated this book if it was set in America. British slang and lifestyle is so much more likeable. The setting between England & Scotland made this book.
  2. really never want to be a seventeen year old again. The teenage years are an angsty mess I want to leave behind — YA contemporary usually isn’t for me but see above.
  3. Talia Hibbert is lovely and hilarious. I want to devour anything she writes.
  4. The OCD rep and character diversity were enjoyable additions.

So freaking adorable. Love the deeper message too. Even though I’m clearly not the target audience, I still enjoyed it very much.

Ahhh smh — par for the course with Keri Lake — I’m honestly in love with the first half of all her stories and then they completely go downhill for me. I did love the angels & demons vibe of this one. That ending was not it for me. I may or may not read the conclusion story (book two).

Wins:
  • The purgatory-type setting
  • Dudes with wings
  • Lustina’s backstory (historical perspective was so much better)
  • OTP trope
  • Creepy demons (the thrills)
  • Constantine (the movie) vibes
  • Jane Eyre (the book) vibes; Rochester in a gothic castle atmosphere
  • Dual timeline — multi perspective

Losses:
  • Farryn’s whiny-ass perspective
  • Alphahole behaviour
  • Aggressive sex scenes
  • About 100 pages TOO FUCKING LONG
  • the pregnancy omg NO

I enjoyed it more than The English Patient but its overall plot and storyline was still hard to follow (perspective and time-wise); there were so many diverse characters to follow. Felt autobiographical but was a work of fiction — interesting voyage.

I feel like I enjoyed this one less than Group but it was still an interesting journey. Maybe it came across a little too white privileged at times (strong middle class America vibes) but I could relate to her struggles and be compassionate. Losing a friend to cancer is so tough — we can all relate to that.
