Redbone: The True Story of a Native American Rock Band by Sonia Paoloni, Christian Staebler
4.0
I love nonfiction graphic novels. This was an informative story about the political times of the rise (and fall) an an all Native American rock band.
I listened to some of their music after reading this and they’re really good! I recognized the song that was featured in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 1.

Amari and the Night Brothers by B.B. Alston

This was such a fun middle grade! There was even a couple of twists here I hadn’t figured out. I won’t be continuing the series but this was a great first book. Would definitely recommend to younger teens.
That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Demon by Kimberly Lemming
3.75
This was a funny, adventurous story about a thick, dark colored woman who saves a demon by accident when she’s drunk and going on a journey with him. There’s instalove which isn’t my favorite trope but I let it slide for this one because the two of them were cute together.
Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie
5.0
The more I think about this the more I love it and am in awe of what Ann accomplished. The POV is from an AI that can control hundreds of people at a time and see everything through them. I can’t imagine how difficult that was to create without being confusing. I think she did an absolutely excellent job of that. That is the most unique (and now my favorite) POV I’ve ever read from. Simple fascinating.
This book does start right in the middle of the conflict so you’re more than likely going to be confused for the first half of the book but the payoff was amazing. Everything was explained thoroughly and it was like nothing I’ve read before. I cannot wait to continue this trilogy.

Out There Screaming by Jordan Peele, John Joseph Adams

Stopped at Norwood Trouble story. Had to return to the library and there was a wait. I placed it on hold but I am just not caring about the stories anymore lol maybe the break will do me good and when I get it back I’ll be excited to pick it up again.
It got alittle bit better. The only two stories I loved were Rebecca Roanhorse’s and P. Djeli Clark. A lot of these feel so unfinished and drop off in the middle of a scene. I understand the craft of short stories is difficult but this was just an “okay” mix of short stories. I’m disappointed.

The Woods All Black by Lee Mandelo

“When they call you a monster, show your teeth.”
What a dark, mysterious and satisfying novella! Historical horror, trans romance and blood-soaked revenge is exactly what this book is! I loved the setting, the use of pronouns, and the small-town religiosity. I’ve never read a fictional love story set in 1920’s Appalachia but I’m here for it. Figuring out what the darkness was that was haunting the woods was fun too. Also, I have never read monster fucking before and I really liked it in this book hahaha. I do wish that we got more background into how Steve got his werewolf ability. I feel like that was glossed over a bit. Additionally, I think the story could have been longer and the romance expanded on a bit more because that was honestly my favorite part. I can’t wait to read more of Lee Mandelo’s backlist starting with Summer Sons. Thank you to Netgalley and Tordotcom for this arc in exchange for an honest review.

Black by Jamal Igle, Kwanza Osajyefo

Action-packed graphic novel set in a world where only black people have superpowers. Read it for a read-a-thon, not invested enough to continue the series.
The Kiss Curse by Erin Sterling
3.5
I liked the romance in this one more than in The Ex Hex. More low stakes which at the end was heightened cause to have some sort of conflict? I would have liked the conflict to have been resolved differently but overall it was very cute.
