3.5
This is more of a 3.5 for me.
I feel a bit confused with the ending. I don’t hate how it ended, but it felt unfinished and abrupt. Honestly though, my biggest gripe with this graphic novel was the lettering. There was SO MUCH on almost every page that it was hard to read sometimes. The panes needed to be bigger and sobeit if the book was longer because of it. I think it would have helped the storytelling. I liked the characters mostly. I liked that they weren’t perfect and they were all different. Loved the representation!

For anyone saying this is basically just Daisy Jones rewritten, I beg you to dig deeper and ask yourself why you’re only seeing the storytelling and not the actual stories. These characters, the stories, the truth that’s found, the love, and the setting are all wildly different.
Opal and Nev discusses a topic that is grossly similar to where I am now in 2022 even though the book is set in the kid 1970s and 2016. And yet we’re still fighting a lot of those same fights. And there are days where I wonder if much has been improved.
Dawnie Walton is a powerful writer and voice with a powerful story about race, our country, secrets, and love. To say that her book is comparable to another simply because of the time it takes place and the writing style choice is disgustingly unfair and untrue.
