I think my biggest issue is that RY does not and cannot write series well, let alone a high fantasy series well. This book likely will make more sense once the series is complete, but as is this book makes very little sense in relation to the previous two books. There is still almost no character development, existing problems were not only not solved but made far more confusing. New problems were introduced and left unresolved with one HUGE new problem closing with the most unsatisfying resolution. There was so much build up and it was closed without answering any of the questions it brought up. The side characters we love had zero contribution to the story and were not written well which was incredibly disappointing. It seemed like they were only there to name drop some fan favorites and honestly it was insulting to the readers. I’m sad but didn’t know what to expect, I don’t know where to go from here with this series.
Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

what the fuck. will be one of the most memorable books I’ve read so far. was it far too long and did I think fmc was insufferable? yes. do I care? no. I don’t really have words for this one.
I liked this story a lot. I don’t often read novellas so I feel like my rating is skewed. Since I typically read epic 600+ page fantasy novels or huge series, this felt a bit lacking. I would love more time spent with Djola and Mama Agba or the high priestess. More time with the characters would help the change of heart the FMC constantly goes through feel more believable. It felt rushed but being a novella I can move past it. I do really like this story and am excited to read more.
I loved this book. It gives the same feeling as Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy. There were countless quotes that I will wish to reread over and over. Will definitely be recommending this frequently. Very well done.
