I don't know how to explain this but if someone asked me to tell them what this book was about I wouldn't be able to do it. Yet this book somehow resonated with my soul. Hatchling was decently my favourite story with eating the city being the least interesting to me (to the point I dnfed that one)
I have tried to pick this book back up way to many times. The concept is really interesting the exclecution not so mutch. Everyone one kept getting on my nerves, the way they talked made want to throw the book away...
I simply loved this book, everything was just right, it was a rollercoaster of emotions, laughter, hope, rage, pain, more pain and lastly more pain.
The exploration of the ripple effects of colonialism and capitalism tide to racism, white sense of superiority, sexism and classism all the while we follow the path of those that got to experience both worlds in a way, was masterfully done from beginning to end.
Every character felt grounded and real. ROBIN’s development definitely resonated with me, from being someone that will join the fight for liberation, because he somehow graps the consequences of the colonial projects, but only until it actually puts his commodities in jeopardy, to being so devastated over everything that he suffered because of the colonial empire, because of everything he lost, everyone he lost, losing hope for a happy future for himself, making, at last the ultimate sacrifice, his reconciliation with the fact that no matter what he will always be just a boy from Canton and not an Englishman… tears just tears. Ramy and Victoire on the other hand did not have the issues that Robin had to conciliate the fact that they were part of their motherland. For both of them their relationships with those around them was a little more inside full to me, since they don't really have page time by themselves. Ramy's relationships with Robin and Letty were… chefs kiss. And Victoires relationship with Letty as well as Anthony, the way she reunited with her roots, found her culture in some way again… Oh Anthony. One of the best moments to me was when Anthony talked to Letty about masters. Those lines will be engraved in my mind forever. Speaking of Letty… she makes my blood boil, don't get me wrong she is a product of her environment, but goddamn those were her friends… her interlude made hate her even more, what do you mean, you experience descrimination but cannot put yourself in the shoes of your friends, fuck off, Also loved the somewhat exploration of the guilt riden coloniser that has to be comforted fot the atrocities her country commited. Now to my favorite character Griffin, in the beginning I did not expect to love this man like I do now, the progressive radicalization he experienced, I resonated with everything he said, his perspective of the use of violence, how the colonial empire is supported by the capitalist wheel that puts profit over lives, his sacrifices, everything about him is so painful to rethink.
The ending had me in shambles. I wanted a happy ending, to know that the translator's sacrifice at Babel had made an impact, but that's the issue isn’t it? Colonialism and capitalism are way too embedded in our society, to just crumble down with one act of defiance. So one of the biggest life lessons I take with me is that together we could do it, but in order to mobilize like that we have to put people's commodities at risk, because empathy for those that suffer does not come to us all unfortunately. If one rod stops so will the clock eventually.
This book was everything it promised to be. R. F Kuang is definitely a genius, this book is prove of it, even those that didn't like it have to admit it.
For people whose first language isn't english i definitely recommend the audiobook, because it helps with linguistics part of it all.
I dont even know where to start. This book is for sure a ride. IF anyone wants to read this please look up the trigger warnings, it deals with alot of heavy stuff

The book started out really strong and fast in a way that really intrigued me, but somehow the rest of the first half went kinda meh. I just procrastinated while reading it. I just felt like some scenes where not that necessary for the plot. The last third definitely gets .... well it gets something thats for sure. He imitates smells just like a psicopath imitates behavior. He copies the smell of "human" just like a psycopath would copy a "normal" person response to something. The incest was unnecessary. At the end I just ask myself wtf did I just read.
