This was my second book from Simone St. James — my first being The Sun Down Motel — and it blew me away. It threaded together so many different things — the toxic “good ol’ boy” culture within police forces, forced institutionalization, how so very little women and girls are believed are taken seriously — and it did so in such a way that made for a tense, thrilling, ultimately sad read. While the end seemed a bit rushed to me, I believe that the meandering plot before the climax more than made up for it for it.
I definitely recommend this book if you’d be into something that, while spooky sometimes, is mostly a critique on how little thought is given to women and girls and their experiences, both currently and historically.

Graphic: Child death, Death, and Forced institutionalization
Moderate: Addiction, Panic attacks/disorders, and Police brutality
Minor: Rape, Sexual assault, Xenophobia, Antisemitism, and Murder

The writing just wasn't for me; I wanted to like it, but I couldn't get into it, which is unfortunate because it sounded like something I would love. Oh well, you can't love all of them.

me going into King of Scars: ya know, I think I grew out of the Grishaverse, I don’t think I’m gonna like this duology as much

A cute middle grade book about doing what it takes to win, but trying not to lose yourself (or your friends) along the way.

Most definitely a "it's not you, it's me" situation. I thought this focused more on the writing aspect, but it's more of a "how writing can help the rest of your life" book instead. Not what I'm looking for, but that's okay!

I've been meaning to tidy my room, and I wanted to check out anything Marie Kondo had to offer. I found her method simple and straightforward, and I can't wait to try it out on my bedroom.
The only reason I didn't rate it 5 stars is because some of the assertions made seemed a bit far-fetched, and sometimes the writing seemed a bit too ad-like in its "this will absolutely work!" messaging. It wasn't inherently bad, assuming that's how other self-help books are (I dunno, I don't really read them), but it just didn't jive with me.
I'm still really happy to get started on my bedroom, though 😌

This was a quick read, with it being both in verse and only about 200 pages. It was pretty good for what it was -- while it didn't blow me away, the story was good, and I liked how it ended on a high note. I especially appreciated the focus on a teenage boy with an eating disorder and body dysmorphia; I haven't seen many books tackle something like that.
Graphic: Eating disorder
Minor: Death of parent
On top of having an eating disorder, the MC also has body dysmorphia.
