1Q84: Book One and Book Two by Haruki Murakami
5.0
Wow wow wow wow wow - so much went on, the story just drew me innnnn the fact I’ve read so many pages so quickly is a testament to that. Usual dose of murakami objectifying teenage girls + women but I’m gonna just block that out of my brain x
Days at the Morisaki Bookshop by Satoshi Yagisawa
4.5
So heartwarming and sweet. Literally a whole book based around a second hand bookstore - so how could it be bad?? I loved the parts on reading, finding yourself etc, (aka part 1) but part 2 fell a little short for me just bc I didn’t really like momoko’s character as much as the others
The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton

This broke my little heart. So much yearning, so much dry humour, so many unsaid things … also countess olendka gave me the same energy as Anna karenina
The Anarchy: The East India Company, Corporate Violence, and the Pillage of an Empire by William Dalrymple
3.5
He deffo knew his stuff, researched well, and knew how to write. But his writing style was very clunky, the pacing was a bit off and kept pulling me out the story bc it would jump around from fast passed and skimming to slow and in-depth. I also would’ve preferred conclusions at the end of each chapter on how this linked to current corporate powers - the conclusion at the end was good but should’ve been weaved in throughout the book. But the history was interesting and I did learn a lot.

Bro it literally read like a textbook - I wanted to finish this by the end of the year but I couldn’t. This wasn’t as good as I wanted it to be - but maybe that’s an issue with the translation bc half the time they didn’t talk like real people - will keep it for reference tho

This book actually blew my mind. It was so well written, and it wasn’t very science fiction heavy so I got used to it quicker. There were so many moments where I felt sick and uncomfortable and I felt tense reading it - it was genuinely so powerful
Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture by Douglas Coupland

This was what I wanted “on the road” to be like … it was alright … I liked the first 1/3 and then it all kind of fell off a bit especially the last 1/3
Finding Me: A Memoir by Viola Davis
4.0
Really interesting read. I’ve only watched one or two things w viola Davis in it so I can’t say I really knew much about her. But this was a really interesting take on her life and her acting and I could really see how self reflective and positive she was. I thought it was really interesting in terms of the intersectionality of her growing up in poverty in America as a black woman. The only reason it hasn’t got 5-stars is bc sometimes the pacing was a bit off and it threw me out of the book a couple of times
