The characters did a lot of lounging around for being in the middle of a fuckin’ apocalypse. And apparently all you gotta do is recite poetry to stop a dude from spreading the plague.

With that said, I have a lot more problems with it than I should. Let’s start out with the general idea. Being the Grim Reaper’s lawyer. It’s a good idea but the way it was executed just took all the magic away. I didn’t enjoy the way Eden was set up or the way Reapers were set up. This is mostly just a Me problem so if you enjoyed it, good for you. I just felt like there’s so much we could’ve learned about Eden but the most we learned is the Departments and the fact they have different colors lmao.
Second, the main character! Love her, I really do, she’s the one with the most personality but dear god, the writer mentions her fixing her hair every 2 seconds. I understand that because she’s a POC that her hair is much more of an importance in her life but there’s no reason for you to mention it every chapter. I feel like we put on a fashion show for this character every second we get instead of focusing on idk.. literally everything else. I felt like I was reading a Wattpad story that I wrote in the 6th grade with the whole “She sauntered out of the shower and threw her hair in a bun”. If it’s your cup of tea, great! But not me :(
Third problem, the love story. We dramatically go from Aiden hating the shit out of Joy to absolutely head over heels. This seemed like it was supposed to be a slow burn but it really wasn’t. They quickly move from hating to love overnight. I hate that. The sex was hot asf though so I won’t completely complain.
Next problem, Aiden Kim. I was so ecstatic to have an Asian character representation but sadly his character was just not good. He was shallow and not because he was a bad character but because the Author didn’t give him any personality or fleshed out backstory. He was so flat besides his stubbornness. Was he hot? Yes, but without a personality I feel like i’m reading about a brick wall. We have very minimal backstory too which makes it worse.
The plot twist was expected and I felt the overarching villain wasn’t great. Honestly, the more I write this review the more I realize how many beginner Author mistakes are here. I believe it’s her first time writing and publishing a book so i’m cutting her some slack but MISS GIRL!! YOU GOTTA PUT SOME GOOD PLOT IN THERE.
The plot felt very slow and they didn’t even do anything. If I was in the afterlife, you’d think i’d go on so many crazy adventures but apparently in this fictional world I wouldn’t. Then at the end, every plot point is shoved in. It’s sad because this book could’ve been great.
In conclusion: Slow plot and predictable plot, shallow characters, good idea but not executed well, overall boring asf. Hot sex scenes though!!
