I read this book with my mother and it took us awhile to get through even though I would consider this book fast paced. The story was definitely intriguing but it took awhile to get into the groove of the book. I REALLY enjoyed the ending. Probably wouldn’t read again but glad I did.
Okay, let me start out with how long it took me to read this book. Over a year. I’m not one to stop reading a book all together and just put it back on my shelf, but with this one I did. I picked it back up today (October 20th, 2021) Finished the last couple chapters because it had been in my “currently reading” for a YEAR. I would consider the book fast paced, it just gets tedious at times.
I really enjoy Kali Ling. I enjoyed the fact that she’s a person of color and really incorporates her culture at the end. I also enjoy the other characters like Derek, Lily and Hannah. They were all significantly diverse and I believe it made them more enjoyable to read. Rooke I had a problem with because I felt he was really watered down except maybe the whole Taoist thing.
I’m a huge fan of virtual reality and have been looking for other books like Ready Player One, so this is the only reason I picked up this book in the first place. I wasn’t disappointed with the ending but it was obviously predictable. I enjoy the whole competition of virtual reality fighting and believe it will eventually be a huge thing in real life. I believe this book showed a glimpse of what that world would look like and that part didn’t disappoint.
I’m only rating it a 2.5 because of how long it took me to read and how much I didn’t want to finish it. Idk.
I read this book in 5th grade and loved it, but older now I love it even more. I enjoy the humor that magnus has throughout the series (although that’s all Rick Riordan books) The diversity of the characters is probably the best and I liked the side characters the most. It’s pretty relaxing to read because it’s not full of challenging ideas, so it’s nice to read when stressed. I finished it pretty quick because of this haha. Anyway, and enjoyable book with enjoyable characters.
. It was written so well it was like music spilling off the pages. I didn’t cry only because my friend was there, but if I was alone I would have. The relationship between Patrolous and Achilles made me believe in love although Achilles was a narcissist. He throws it all away for Achilles at the end and it really makes you see his true character. The end makes you want to read more although there won’t be. You know that they will be together in the underworld and that’s enough for me.
UPDATED REVIEW: I wrote this review years ago and I don’t agree with it all. I was watching a video though that said all of her 5 star books stuck with her emotionally, and well, this one has for me. I will be moving it to a 5 star book and coning back later to give my REAL REVIEW.
I first watched the show and absolutely loved it so I HAD to read the book. For the most part the book is the exact same as the show except for some little details which don’t matter as much. I enjoyed reading it and it’s probably one of my favorite books to date. You can really feel Beth’s emotions throughout the book because they are explained and written so well. I would suggest this book to anyone who’s looking for a fast paced, tense, emotional story.
I actually enjoyed the movies so I decided to read the books but was very disappointed. I enjoyed the system of the government and even the “choosing ceremony” which in retrospect is pretty cheesy. At first I liked Tris but I hated the relationship she had with Four. It was unbelievably annoying especially when they would kiss during a “tense” scene. Although I think the book could have turned out really well, the writing was just bad.
