The first book in the Riyria Revelations, this book does start slow, but the series is definitely worth reading. The biggest draw of the series are the characters and cozy fantasy setting which are all-consuming and lovable. It takes a few chapters to get fully immersed (which is why I took some points off for the first book), but when you do, it's well worth it. The series does have a decent amount of political intrigue which can get slow if that's not your thing, but I find myself thinking about the characters and setting often when I'm not reading, which in my opinion is the mark of a good book!
While my favorite part of this book were the characters and how cozy and consuming the setting felt, the plot was also interesting and tense when it needed to be. I have not read any other of Sullivan’s works, but I will definitely be reading more after this!
The Well of Ascension felt to me like a grown up sibling to Mistborn. Sanderson does a great job building on his established characters. While some parts of the book are politics-heavy, the plot is still complex and interesting and he includes a good deal of suspense along the way. This series has so far been well worth the investment.
I found this book to be disappointing after Name of the Wind. Kvothe becomes almost insufferably full of himself and many of the parts drag. I could probably excuse all this as important parts of his character development but because there is no book 3, this book left a sour taste in my mouth as the end to the series.
This book is fantastic and I’m still glad I read it even though book 2 was disappointing and there will probably never be a book 3. The writing and the world building are both excellent and the story has continued to stick with me even as I pine for book 3.
This book is weird and quirky and constantly surprising. As a serious mystery novel this book would fall short in many ways, but don’t take it too seriously and it’s a good time. If you do want to read it, I recommend buddy reading it with a friend to have someone to experience the weirdness with you.
