 I liked this book, but not as much as her first one. I felt like it deals with very real, very important issues. Missing indigenous women; return of remains and sacred items. But the ending felt rushed and unfinished. She somehow ends up kidnapped during a heist? It wasn’t a great execution of these two themes being woven together. 

 Big fan of Aula, so I had to read her book. She was very honest about her own journey of self-discovery and depression.
I almost lost it reading the “Summer” story. 🥺
“There is a societal myth of “having it all.” It’s the one that says we are supposed to have great jobs, which are also our life purpose and passion, visible abs, successful children, clean houses, doting spouses, and perfect eyebrows. But eyebrows get over plucked in the early 2000s and never quite grow back. Human beings can never be perfect. At some point, every last one of will weaken, come apart, and die.”
“Whatever it is that you know you must do to reconcile your life with your death. Do it. Do it today. And don’t stop until you get enough.” 

 Read this in 2 days. Sometimes that alone makes it a fun read despite some of the flaws and plot holes. 

 This story wasn’t what I was expecting, in a good way. Important commentary on how we view sex workers. I found myself very mad for her a majority of the time. Her mom is crazy toxic and awful and I was really wishing she told her off for good. 

Reader, I can appreciate what this book probably was at its time, however, it mostly makes me so grateful I wasn't born 100 years ago. There were points I found the story interesting and then a lot of it was just over descriptive sentences of the same thing. It is why I struggle with the "classics".
I was so happy she didn't marry St. John - what a manipulative jack wagon. But she did end up with her love, who is also the man who hid his wife in the attic for years. Oof Janet. What a love story.
