A must read !!! I never heard about Anne Moody in school. Unsurprising but disappointing nonetheless. She was a remarkable woman in the civil rights movement.

“Pet” is unlike other books I’ve read. The concept of monsters is used to convey very human evils in a somewhat utopian society. I’m not certain if this story affirms that, as humans, we can’t ever have a perfect society OR if it’s more of a hopeful tone that things can and will get better.
Part of me is confused at the audience age for this book. There seems to be a simplistic aspect but also very complex aspect - there were some elements that seemed to be knocking us over the head with current social issues and there were also parts that seemed a bit more nuanced like the reason for Pet’s appearance. I’m not certain younger children would understand.
Regardless, I think this could be a great book discussion for most age ranges.
