I’ve never read a book set up like this before. Andrew Bevel is a bitch.

I appreciated the read, but like other reviews, I took issue with the idea that this book was about Sarah graves. I get that there’s a new trend in biographies that highlight a culture or event through the lens of one person, but it seemed there just wasn’t enough information on Sarah’s experience to truly illustrate the Donner Party with her singular point of view.

I read Ten Thousand Doors of January a while back and really loved that book and decided to pick up Harrow’s Starling House. Overall, I felt it to be disappointing. The main character feels very immature and unlikable - and, unfortunately, it’s not because she’s a thief or something. She’s just annoying. The insta-love and the corporate hunger really shook the foundation (no pun intended) of what could’ve been an atmospheric gothic book. Missed the mark for me.

Touching story about a strong, even if flawed, friendship. Wish there had been more of the story from Homa’s perspective- what an amazing character.
