I Am Not Your Negro by James Baldwin, Raoul Peck, Alexandra Strauss

Baldwin’s words always hit me to my core. I read this in tandem with watching the documentary and I’m so glad I did. I don’t think I would have caught as much as I did if I had just watched the movie and I don’t think I would have been as moved as I was if there was no music, less photos, and no videos of the protests and the assassinated.

This was so incredibly hard to read. Please check trigger warnings if you are planning on trying it out. It’s amazing the growth any experience outside of your small circle can cause and it’s disgusting how easily hateful and abusive things can be framed as “the will of God.”

Did not finish book. Stopped at 46%.
I had too hard of a time getting through this book. I was constantly flipping back and forth between appreciating the new perspectives I was being offered and feeling unsatisfied with the platitudes and random Christian beliefs thrown throughout. I simply decided it must not be for me after I had no desire to read it when my library hold came back to me for the third time.

I’m not sure I have ever rated a book that took me so long to get through with 5 stars, but this one deserves it! Genuinely eye opening. Like I knew the medical system had a lot of problems with racial bias, but to have so many concrete examples told to me was simply mind blowing. I truly think every person should read this book.

I generally really liked this book. However, if I were to give it a critique, it would definitely be in the romance area. I found our two main characters to be a bit insufferable at times. Particularly in tense scenes, the way Violet would think about him just honestly pissed me off. Like get your mind out of the gutter for 10 seconds so you can save your friends and yourself please.

I said I wouldn’t read the second book if a specific character died, but luckily that character was not killed off… So I guess I’ll be reading the second book lol

A bit too sad for a book where not much happened. Simultaneously made me care while somehow not caring at all…

I always love Morrison’s writing. In a way I wish I didn’t read the introduction before reading the short story so I could be part of the experiment. But then again, I’m glad I read the introduction so I had the context of the meaning behind the story. I’m not sure I would have caught on without that.
