Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone by J.K. Rowling
5.0
Rating: 4.65
Plot:
Harry has never even heard of Hogwarts before when the letters start coming in. Being orphaned when he was only a year old Harry had been sent off to live with his grisly aunt and uncle who want nothing to do with magic. But as luck would have it, Harry has a shot at getting away from them when hundreds of owls swarm his home in an attempt to reach him. But uncle Vernon is determined to keep him away and so they traverse across the country in an attempt to escape the magical world to no avail.
Rubeous Hagrid, a giant of a man and Hogwarts’s gamekeeper, personally comes to collect the boy who lived in order to bring him to where he belongs: among his fellow witches and wizards. Harry, being new to the wizarding world is thoroughly astonished as to the fact that this world of magic and mystery has been living in secret right under his nose.
But all is not well at Hogwarts, oh no. Lord Voldemort, a dark and powerful wizard many thought to be dead is still alive, well…somewhat alive. Voldemort longs to return to power and once again instill fear in the hearts of all who know his name but without a magical artifact, known as the philosophers stone, he cannot succeed.
Now Harry, along with his newly made friends must face Voldemort head on. He needs to learn the secrets of Hogwarts and must learn to trust his instincts if he is to survive the dark lord’s struggle for power.
Will the boy who lived be able to face his enemy once again?
Characters:
There are a lot of characters in this book and I loved all of them, yes even Draco. They were wonderful to read about I particularly liked the relationship between Harry, Ron and Hermione, it was simply adorable!
Hagrid was so sweet and funny, especially with Norbert and Harry. I wouldn’t mind having a gentle giant like him around to help me. He and Harry worked together wonderfully and I feel that since he was the first person to show Harry any real kindness, the two of them have a very special bond.
Ron was a dear and was really fun to read about, so was Hermione with her smarts and cleverness. I would talk about everyone a little more but I feel like I might run out of space!
Thoughts:
I loved it! What were you expecting me to say? Of course I adore this book. Everyone was so wonderful and interesting to read about and I loved all the relationships presented in this novel. The plot twists weren’t much of a shocker for me since I've watched all the movies before hand and I know, I know I shouldn’t have done that but in my defense at the time I didn't know that Harry Potter was a book series or else I wouldn’t have done that.
But anyways, I loved this book. It was so magical and mystical that you can’t help but adore it. Plus the fact that it was set in England, one of my favorite places in the world, helped a lot. Overall great read.
If you like books about funny wizards, giant castles and mean but caring Potions teachers (Snape, I'm looking at you) go read this.

Can You Keep a Secret? by Sophie Kinsella
4.0
Rating: 4.25
Plot:
Twenty five year old Emma Corrigan has everything, well almost everything, she could ever ask for: a loving, perfect boyfriend, wonderful friends and a job at the Panther Corporation’s UK branch. But thing is she wants to get promoted to marketing executive to prove to her parents that she can be successful. So her boss decides to give her chance and sends her off to Glasgow to seal the deal with another big corporation. But our dear Emma screws things up big time by drenching a businessman in Panther Cola.
Poor thing: she thought that things couldn’t get any worse but then again this is life and life decides to have a little fun with our heroine who happens to have a fear of flying. So when the planes ride becomes turbulent, Emma thinks that she’s gonna die and spills all of her most intimate secrets to the man sitting next to her. No big deal right? I mean she’s never gonna see him again right?
Wrong. Turns out the man she spills her guts to is actually Jack Harper: The man who started the Panther Corporation. And he’s in London. Emma is freaking out since this man, who’s her boss’s boss’s boss’s boss knows everything from what type of underwear she wears to the fact that she thinks her boyfriend looks like Ken from Barbie and Ken. And Jack is equally shocked to see her but he is quick to tease Emma and make her think that her life has gone hell and isn't coming back anytime soon. But somewhere in the chaos, Jack makes Emma see the truth behind her secrets and helps to see what she really wants. And Emma and Jack are both gripped by each other. A romance is in bloom, so read as Jack makes Emma’s wildest dreams come true.
Characters:
I really enjoyed the characters and I liked the way Emma matured throughout the book, how she overcame her boundaries and came out in the end as a new and improved version of herself. She was enjoyable to read about and I loved her sense of humor and her tendency to overreact to different situations. Overall good character development. \
Jack Harper…Where do I begin! He was dreamy, lovely, sweet kind, sexy, hot, amazing, wonderful, kind and so much more! I really loved Jack and during the big fight I was initially rooting for Emma but as the story progressed I started to sympathize with Jack more since he was trying so hard to win her over and honestly Emma was a bit immature about the matter but I understood where she was coming from but really by the end of it I was siding with Jack. Anyways, I’m rambling now. Bottom line Jack Harper is the man any woman desires I seriously wish he was real! GOD! WHY couldn’t he be real! WHY!
Thoughts:
I loved this! Amazing and so well written. I love Kinsella’s books, though they are cheesy and predictable and somewhat cliché, they are simply delicious and you can’t help but love them. But I'm starting to see a pattern in her writing: the heroines are always somewhat clueless and adorable bundles of joy who always have some growing to do. The heroes are mostly young, rich, handsome business men who help the heroine learn from her mistakes. There’s almost always a boyfriend or husband in the picture and the heroine always breaks up with them in order to be with her man and the guys always make you feel faint.
Despite all this I love her books: they're funny, sweet and oh so delicious that I could just melt! This was no exception and as always her stories have managed to lift my spirits and make me smile.
If you like funny and clumsy marketing assistants and hot, sweet millionaires who will make you laugh out loud, go read this.
Oh but one word of advice: Don’t read this in public. You'll be bursting into random bouts of laughter and getting weird stares from people all the time.

A Monster Calls: Special Collectors' Edition (Movie Tie-In): Inspired by an Idea from Siobhan Dowd by Patrick Ness
5.0
Rating: 4.55
Plot:
A monster from the Earth itself comes walking, and it goes to a thirteen year old boy, Conner O’Malley, demanding the most dangerous thing of all…
the Truth…
Characters:
Really well developed and interesting, enjoyable and you really feel for them, especially Conner.
The grandmother may seem like an old fool sometimes and you may hate her but you realize she’s not all that bad after all.
The dad….(pinches bridge of her nose and exhales deeply) don’t even get me started, shame on you daddy dearest!
The Monster, just wonderful, I really liked how he came out in the end.
Thoughts:
How I felt at the beginning of this book:
How I felt at the middle of the novel:
correction, I'm reading the most wonderful book.
How I felt at the end:
The truth is something many of us cannot comprehend. In a world crafted on a foundation of lies and deception, the truth is a strange and abnormal concept that can never be grasped completely.
This was amazing!
Normally I tend to stay away from sad contemporaries but this one was just…great. Honestly I connected really well with the characters and I understand Conner’s struggle with his family.
In order to really love this book you have to be able to sympathize with Conner and unless you’ve experienced something similar to his story you can’t really get him.
But nevertheless, this was just simply wonderful, with just the right blend of magic, mystery, sorrow and originality. I really can’t describe how much this book struck me and its thought provoking story will have your roots knotted in mere minutes.
Just remember, the truth is something all of choose to run from but eventually we all must confront it.
If you like giant tree like monsters and brave boys who can face their truths, go read this.

I really enjoyed this! I listened to the audio book on Overdrive, which I must say was superbly narrated.
This was funny, sweet and had it's tense moments. The book was easy to follow and the humour was amazing.

Really enjoyed the concept of self control and calm in this short story. Good read, considering I had to read this for my academic English class.
