I’ve never been so disappointed by a book. I have loved everything Lahiri has ever written until now. These stories are so stilted and lack any of her usual finesse and beauty. Many of the characters were different identities than her and I felt such a disconnect. I wonder if it is because she wrote them in Italian before translating them into English. The only one I somewhat enjoyed was the last one, “Dante Alighieri.”

I was excited for a romance with Crohn’s rep but the writing was just ok. The Hollywood aspect and fake dating were fun but there wasn’t enough development of the romance for me.

Somewhat simple prose and a lot that could have been explored more, but I genuinely enjoyed this story. It was like a historical fiction in translation version of candy. If candy included a lot of death.
