Having a hard time rating this book because I'm still sitting with it. As a John Darnielle fan, I probably should've known better. A real thinker, I'd say.

This is basically a retelling of the Grinch but instead of Christmas Spirit, it's gay panic that grows the Grinch's heart

It took me a bit to understand the plot of this book, and I left it feeling not very satisfied plot-wise. I think scene transitions felt jarring and ill-paced. That being said, I really enjoyed the characters and the development. I thought the concept was great and there was enough that I got that kept me reading.

The prose was absolutely fantastic. I was captivated by each character. But definitely a hard read.

I liked the world-building and lore of the story. My biggest issue was that the protagonists sounded too familiar of characters. Some character development felt a bit played out. I do see why people really enjoy this book. I'll probably pick up the second book a little later this year.

I liked this book fine. I liked the themes around nature and technology and I thought it was wonderfully written. I just felt that the story meandered too much, which some might enjoy but it just felt weirdly paced. I also didn't love the two main characters too much either. A perfectly fine book but not a huge standout.

Genuinely one of the most fascinating books I've read. Incredibly poignant book for today. There is so much gold in this book.

There was enough meat here for this not to be trauma porn but some of this was hard to read. I still really liked it and will probably stick with me.

Took a little bit to get in it but really raced through the end. I really enjoyed being in this story and really loved the mosaic storytelling. Thought that was fun.
