The Sun and the Void by Gabriela Romero Lacruz

Go to review page

Did not finish book. Stopped at 81%.
Lacruz wanted me to care about all these characters but the romance was weird, the lesbian love triangle was weird, and I was getting annoyed at how the characters didn’t feel real. The writing was very good tho and the world building as well. Just got annoyed at everything else.

This book took everything I liked from the first and doubled it. More diversity, more creativity with their characters, writing that was both emotional and action heavy. Amazing. Loved it. I will say tho, I don’t much care for Elo. I don’t. I wanted to, I really did, but at some points it felt annoying to know him. I did like his dynamic with Naia compared to him and Kissen. I also like Kissen with Lessa a lot. The dynamic feels so cool. It might be the straightness of Elo that made me shy away from his character. Idk. I think I’d like him more if he was queer. Even just like a little. Like so very tiny bit queer. Demisexual but straight. Even that would make him
More likable.
I love Inara and Skedi so so so so much. They remind me of Lyra and Pan from His Dark Materials. I love them and I got so much things reminiscing to Amber Spyglass in this book. They’re mainly why this book is five stars. I loved them. I don’t care about Arren as a POV in this story. I like looking at him in a different POV.

My sibling is currently reading the ACOTAR series and that’s one of my least favorite series, so I thought that since they are going through that torture, I should read one of their least favorite books.
But surprisingly, I actually really enjoyed this book. Now, by no means is this book good. The term “mind rape” is used too much, there’s a lot of incest, and some very dumb things that happen in this book, but I absolutely loved the main character, Kihrin, especially his angst with Teraeth. I don’t much care about Janel, but I will read her book shortly so, I can’t have much of an opinion on her yet.
My main problem with this book was how often rape is used. I did like that we didn’t just let Talon go on what she did to Kihrin. There were actual parts where we saw that Kihrin did feel grief and pain from the traumas that the D’Mons put him through and I liked that! I would like some more queer rep tho, but I know there’s gonna be more.
I absolutely love Thurvishar. That man is amazing.

Rochester is so so very pathetic and I love love love him so so much. Jane is also an amazing character. I love that she makes her own choices about marriage, where she wants to go in life. She has need seeded rage and love for the people that she chooses to have in her life. I loved that.

I got slightly annoyed at this book. I can tell that Blaire tried desperately to make things more steady with the plot with the ending where Keera is stranded in Silstra, but this book suffered! The romance was off and the plot twist with
Riven/Killian
felt thrown in. It didn't feel authentic and neither did the romance with Keera and
Riven/Killian
. At times, it felt as tho Riven was supposed to be the what if of what if Rhysand had actually been feminist and not disgusting and somewhat disgusting, but the thing about Rhysand that actually makes him a bad character/love interest is his lack of personality and Riven suffers just the same as Rhysand did in ACOTAR. Now, I am not saying that Halfling Saga is just an off brand ACOTAR, no, this series is far better than what SJM will ever hope to write, but Riven is Rhysand. And that annoyed me. From the purple eyes, sad past with bad parents, to the way he even acts body wise. I got so annoyed with it and I cannot say this enough, but I am tired of romantacy authors making every single book of theirs have some corolation with SJM books. I do understand that SJM as an author did bring some light to the genre, but I am getting exhausted of seeing nothing authentic in its own right. Halfling Saga does have its quirks and when those are brought to light, I do enjoy them! I love the study of language in these books or the talk of mental disorders, addiction, colonization. I think I just want more from this series than what it is willing to offer. I just want a different type of romance. I want grit, dirt in its nails, blood on its lip, but it still has a certain flavor to it that leaves something stale in my mouth. Maybe more POVs? Idfk.
The plot twist with Riven actually being Killian and Killian actually being Riven made me angry. I get that we are not supposed to have any hinting of any sort in throughout the series that they are actually the same, but Killian had actually been someone and I guess Riven had been too, but I liked Killian a bit too much for him to be Riven and Riven to be him. Ugh. Are we also not gonna talk about how that means that Riven is bi or pan as well if he's Killian because there was some romance between him and Collin before Collin died.

I liked that Marlow still had flaws that trace back to her Christian upbringing. She still says queerphobic things by accident that side characters quickly call her out for and she still says whorephobic stuff as well I liked that she wasn’t a good person all the time. Made me happy.

I want to like this book a lot, mostly because my friend wanted me to read it. I did, but sometimes the characters hurt so much. There’s good commentary in intersectionality in trans feminism and it talks about all the things that happen to trans women in Canada and North America, but I wasn’t prepared for the amount of pain that was in this book. I liked it, but I would get so annoyed at characters like Iris and how the main character in that story refused to leave her or chose to be friends when Iris had been a rapist.
Anyway, this was pretty good.
