"Why did this text survived the test of time?" I usually wonder about this when I read a classic.
Usually, after I'm done with the novel, I know why. I either be mesmerized or understanding, and that'd be that.
However, sometimes, like this time, I'm just gobsmacked. I really didn't like it. Not one bit. And since this novel indeed did stand the test of time, I am left feeling like the odd duck out, and that's... well, not the best feeling to feel.
I really don't understand. Why is everyone sucking the teat of this novel like it's.... *sigh

Granted, I usually dislike "woe is me" stories, and I really can't be bothered with stories romanticizing infidelity "because of our cartoonishly evil wives deserves to be cheated on" and stories discriminating against people with disabilities.. but other than that, I felt I got nothing from this story.
And not to sound like a man hater *which I am, btw, but why do I see people sympathizing with this spineless stupid buffoon of a character? I thought the goal was to light a fire under people asses so they don't be spineless bitches but everyone is loving this ... *sigh .. I'm done, I'm out..

Disclaimer: My dislike of this novel is all on me, I take full responsibility. This is a great novel.

In my enthusiastic whirl after reading Kusakamura, I had high expectations for this novel, which is a recipe for disaster if you asked me..
It was technically imho a great novel. Only it wasn't for me.

I don't usually like novels with themes of obsession and idolizing people, and I'm really weirded out with olden cultures romanticizing suicide. I was uncomfortable reading this. By the halfway point, I was dragging myself by my hair to read it. This fact, in hindsight, should've led me to sense early on that eventually I would not like it, but I was again in my enthusiastic whirl, and I ignored all signs and followed through. I should have dropped it.
