I read this for my Graphic Novels class - I’m so glad I had the excuse to analyze it in-depth. TBWCD is just stunning. So much thought, emotion, conversation, learning, and labor went into this story and it’s incredibly layered. It will stay with me for years to come.
Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

this was a beautiful story. i enjoyed the pace - it moved fast without feeling rushed. i liked the ambiguity that ran throughout the whole book too; i won’t spoil anything but LaCour’s writing allowed for lots of suspense and i wasn’t sure about where the farm stood in terms of good/bad!
elements of magical realism are subtle and symbolic. reading this take on a ghost story where the ghosts aren’t exactly scary or bad was really fun too! instead, the way they “haunt” is a metaphor for the pain one experiences in the healing process when reliving trauma.
overall i thought Watch Over Me was a wonderful portrayal of trauma and healing, with an ultimately hopeful tone.
