I picked up this book because it was at the top of the Amazon epic fantasy bestseller list. That was a mistake. It’s fantasy romance which is not what I was looking for. I’m not denigrating the genre; it’s just not my thing.
As an epic fantasy—which is how I’ll grade this as it’s how I found it—this book is lacking in character depth and world building. There’s only two or three characters that feel like real people and they’re in a lust triangle and everything in the world feels entirely too convenient.
There are also some odd stylistic choices like having everyone speak in modern vernacular which was a bit off putting.
