The absolute perfect sequel to Dearest Milton James with Malachi getting his own letters. I loved seeing their relationship from Julian's POV and knowing how much he loves Malachi.
It was wonderful, seeing where they were four years in the future.
The office gang is still there, quirky and loving as ever.

From the first book in the series, I’ve wanted to see what caused Steffen to be the big paranoid conspiracy theorist he is. In the previous books, I didn’t get a sense that anyone really tried to dig into the whole reason why. They just accepted that he was one. In this book, we find out those reasons and why no one really tried to dig into Steffen’s history. And oh boy, it explains a lot.
There were so many surprises for me in this book, the first one being how long Wil and Steffen have been in a relationship. It made sense why no one knew with Steffen’s paranoia. I loved how Wil knew Steffen so well that he would read when the paranoia was coming to the forefront for Steffen and what to do when it did. Another surprise occurs more towards the end of the book. The “mystery” in this book was back forwards the intensity level of the Hidden Species series for me.
With that said, I think one of my favorite things was how beneficial Steffen’s paranoia was for him and for the safety of the community at large in this book. There were a number of times that Steffen’s need to plan and protect saved them. It was nice to see some vindication for him. I was also glad to see Steffen get a handle on the control his paranoid had over him, learning how to accept and acknowledge it. Wil’s understanding and acceptance of where Steffen was made me love his character even more. He helps Steffen grow so much with his mental health in this book.
The book has a great ending, where it leaves these two along with the rest of the dragon family.

I read this book, after reading the “Part of Your World” series. I loved those books, and I was anxious to read more from this author. I loved the characters in those books and all their flaws, some of them even with mental health issues.
This book is harder for me to rate. I loved the story and how it played out overall. Parts of it definitely caught me by surprise. Tackling a tough subject like infertility, which is a physical and emotional issue that affects so many, is a subject that needed its own story. Overall, I enjoyed the characters in this book, and I hurt along with them when they had to deal with so many things. Josh was my favorite character by far. What an incredible guy he was. I loved that he wasn’t threatened by a strong woman, and in fact, knew how to handle them after having grown up with six of them as sisters.
I had a harder time with Kristen. In the f/m romance novels I read, I insist that the female MCs are strong women who aren’t “wimpy.” And Kristen is definitely a strong woman. I think Josh defines her well in the book.
She was like a unicorn. A mythical creature. An honest, no-drama woman who didn’t bullshit and drank beer and cussed and didn’t care about what people thought of her. She was a unicorn, tucked in the body of an attractive woman with a great ass.
She should be someone I embrace and laud, but as the book went on, I wanted to shake her every time she locked down emotionally and ghosted Josh, breaking his heart a little bit more. To me, she came off as selfish rather than selfless, obstinate instead of holding to her principles, and a stubborn know-it-all instead of self-aware. Yes, her mental health issues and her relationship with her mother clouded her ability to assess, but I couldn’t stand how she summarily decided Josh’s future WITHOUT asking him. Thank goodness he was the “unicorn” between the two of them.
So, I’m left trying to decide between 3 and 4 stars. Because of that, I’m going with 3.5 stars.
