I had to take some time to sit with this story after finishing it because I wasn’t very sure how to feel. I can’t say I found it to be a page-turner or even very enjoyable (it also didn’t help that the first third kept reminding me of A Little Life), but it had some moments so tender and heartbreaking that I found myself crying at the end from all the emotions.
Though it revolved around video games and the lives of the MCs who made them, this book was ultimately about grief—coping with it, living with it, and maybe even overcoming it. It was also about loss (and not necessarily to death)—losing people you’ve always had, losing people you’ve come to know and love, and losing what could have been.
All in all, I’m glad I read it.
